Claiming physiotherapy on your insurance

We prepare every document an insurer asks for, and we complete your claim form. What we cannot do is change what your policy covers — so the most useful thing on this page is the part that helps you check that before you spend anything.

Read this before you assume you are covered

Most Indian retail health policies exclude standalone outpatient physiotherapy. Cover usually applies only when physiotherapy follows hospitalisation — after surgery or an accident — under post-hospitalisation benefits, or when you hold an OPD rider or a corporate plan with outpatient benefits.

Please confirm your own position with your insurer before booking rather than relying on a general expectation that physiotherapy is covered. Section 2 below tells you exactly what to ask.

What we give you

The complete claim pack, issued as you go

Incomplete documentation is the most common reason a physiotherapy claim is delayed or rejected. Every one of these is prepared during treatment rather than assembled afterwards.

  • Itemised GST invoice

Every payment, with our GSTIN, registration details and a line for each session. This is the document every insurer asks for first.

  • Prescription or referral

Where a doctor referred you for physiotherapy, we keep a copy on file and reissue it with your claim pack.

  • Clinical assessment report

Diagnosis, findings and the clinical justification for treatment — signed by your physiotherapist.

  • Treatment record

Dates attended, what was done in each session, and the re-assessment measurements showing progress.

  • Discharge summary

Issued at the end of a programme, stating outcome against the goals set at assessment.

  • Claim form counter-signature

We complete and sign the treating-provider section of your insurer’s form. Bring it to any session.

Before you book

Two questions that get a usable answer

Call the toll-free number on your insurance card and ask these two, in these words:

  • “Is outpatient physiotherapy covered under my policy?”
  • “Do I need pre-authorisation or a doctor’s referral for it?”

Then ask for the reference number of the call and write it down. A general question about whether physiotherapy is covered tends to get a general answer; these two get something you can hold the insurer to later.

Tell us what they said — message it to us and we will tell you what documentation that answer implies.

Typically covered

  • Physiotherapy after joint replacement, ligament reconstruction or spinal surgery
  • Rehabilitation after a road traffic accident or fracture
  • Neurological rehabilitation after a stroke, where it follows admission
  • Any physiotherapy within the post-hospitalisation window of your policy

Typically excluded

  • Outpatient treatment for chronic back, neck or knee pain with no admission
  • Postural correction and ergonomic programmes
  • Sports performance and conditioning work
  • Wellness, fitness and preventive programmes

The process

Five steps, start to settlement

  1. 01

    Check your policy first

Call your insurer before you book and ask specifically about outpatient physiotherapy and pre-authorisation. Five minutes here saves a rejected claim later.

  2. 02

    Tell us at booking

Mention that you intend to claim. We will flag the file so every document is prepared in claimable form from your first session.

  3. 03

    Pay and collect documents

Pay at each session, or per package. Your invoice and records are issued as you go rather than reconstructed at the end.

  4. 04

    Bring the claim form

Hand your insurer’s form to reception at any session. We complete and sign the provider section, usually the same day.

  5. 05

    Submit and follow up

Submit the complete pack to your insurer. If they ask for anything further, forward the request to us and we will supply it directly.

Questions

Insurance questions we are asked most

Does health insurance cover physiotherapy in India?
It depends on the policy and the circumstances. Most retail health policies cover physiotherapy when it follows hospitalisation — as post-operative or post-accident rehabilitation, usually under post-hospitalisation benefits lasting 60 to 90 days after discharge. Standalone outpatient physiotherapy for something like chronic back pain is excluded from most base policies, and is covered only where you hold an OPD rider or a corporate group plan that includes outpatient benefits.
How do I find out whether my policy covers it?
Call the toll-free number on your insurance card and ask two specific questions: “Is outpatient physiotherapy covered under my policy?” and “Do I need pre-authorisation or a doctor’s referral?” Ask for the reference number of that call. A general question about physiotherapy tends to get a vague answer; those two get a usable one.
Do you offer cashless treatment?
Contact the centre to confirm the current position for your insurer before booking, on the assumption that you may need to pay and claim reimbursement afterwards. We give you the complete document pack for a reimbursement claim in every case.
How long does a reimbursement claim take?
Most insurers settle a complete, correctly documented physiotherapy claim in 15 to 30 days. Incomplete documentation is the single biggest cause of delay, which is why we issue the full pack rather than only an invoice.
What if my claim is rejected?
Ask the insurer for the rejection reason in writing. If it is a documentation gap, we will reissue or expand whatever is missing at no charge. If the insurer disputes the clinical necessity, your physiotherapist can provide a detailed justification letter. If it is a genuine policy exclusion, no amount of paperwork changes it — and we will tell you that rather than let you keep trying.
Can I claim tax deduction on physiotherapy?
Section 80DD and 80U provide deductions for the treatment and maintenance of a dependant with a disability, or for a taxpayer with a certified disability, and physiotherapy costs can fall within them. Section 80D covers health insurance premiums and, in limited cases, preventive health check-ups — not general outpatient treatment. Ask a chartered accountant about your own situation; we can supply whatever invoices and certificates you need.
Still unsure? Call +91 86193 28981 with your policy to hand and we will go through it with you. There is no charge for that, and no obligation to book.

Tell us where it hurts. We will tell you what it will take.
